Proficiency Levels
Level 1: Beginner
Student shows understanding through gestures (pointing, nodding, or acting out answers), is able to answer WH-questions, name pictures, people, and objects, and is starting to learn high frequency words with their corresponding sounds. They are able to draw following instructions.

Level 2: Early Inter.
Student is able to follow two-step oral directions, read high frequency words and decode text with letter/sound patterns. They are able to ask WH-questions and describe pictures, events, and objects using simple language, lists, drawings, or short written sentences.

Level 3: Intermediate
Student is able to locate, select, and order information following oral instructions, is able to read most high frequency words in increasingly complex texts, and is able to identify main ideas while sequencing events. They are able to produce short written texts.

Level 4: Advanced
Student is able to compare and contrast, analyze information, and identify cause and effect. They are able to identify word families and infer meaning through knowledge of language while discussing concepts and writing more complex texts using conventions.

Level 5: Fluent
Student is able to draw conclusions, understand words out of context, conduct research, and participate in activities where information must be applied to new contexts. They are also able to write in multiple genres and can explain and justify their reasoning.
